Root shines on day one of the first Ashes Test. Australia won day one of the first Ashes Test in Edgbaston by a score of 14-0 at the stumps.

On day two, David Warner, age 8, and Usman Khawaja, age 4, will resume batting for the Australians.

England declared their first innings earlier after scoring 393 runs in 78 overs and losing eight wickets.

With seven fours and four sixes, Joe Root made a spectacular hundred for 118 runs, keeping him unbeaten.

Zack Crawley hit Australian captain Pat Cummins for a four with the first ball of England's innings, which followed their "Bazball" strategy.

Ben Duckett returned to the pavilion after scoring only 12 runs as England lost by 22 runs to Josh Hazlewood.

England lost their second wicket by 92 runs as Ollie Pope could not defend himself from Nathan Lyon, the spinner, who bowled him out after scoring 31 runs off 44 balls.

After scoring 32 runs off 37 deliveries and scoring four boundaries, Harry Brook lost his wicket in an odd way when Lyon's short-of-length delivery got extra bounce and hit Brook's thigh pad before hitting the wicket after being in the air for some time.

Ben Stokes, England's captain, lost his wicket to Hazlewood in the following over shortly after Brook left. After scoring 78 runs off 78 balls with 12 fours, Bairstow was stumped by Alex Carey on Lyon's ball and lost his wicket.

After scoring just 18 runs in 17 balls, Moeen Ali was stumped by Carey on Lyon's delivery, and Green bowled Broad.

Root and Bairstow shared 121 runs to prevent their team from succumbing early to Australia's bowling attack.

In 15 overs, Hazlewood, who took Mitchell Starc's place, took two wickets and scored 61 runs. Scott Boland, the hero of the World Test Championship (WTC) final against India, only managed to get one wicket for 86 runs in 14 overs, but Lyon got four as he gave up 149 runs in 29 overs. In six overs, Cameroon Green also took one wicket and scored 32 runs.
